The Search | Interactive installation (Louisiana, DK)

“Will you volunteer to save humanity? The Search is an interactive installation where you can test if your personality is fit to travel into outer space in search of new, habitable planets when life on earth is no longer possible. The installation and its scenography is also part of the film project The Search. Viewed together, the project expands different scenarios that try to come to terms with the consequences of man’s limited time here on earth in light of for example climate change, overpopulation and natural catastrophes.”

― Michael Madsen, Director

Physical: The Room of Navigation

Consisting of a sculptural table (aluminium) & accompanying lamp (aluminium, steel, fabric) placed in a deep-blue, felt-clad room with rounded edges, the physical installation is equal parts film-set and context for the interactive layer.

It serves to as both the Room of Navigation aboard the fictional spacecraft that will feature in The Search as well as be a physical presence that through its sculptural design invokes an atmosphere conducive to reflecting upon departing earth in search of new, habitable planets.

Digital: Personality Test

The web-app is the centrepiece of the installation as well as its interactive aspect. The main feature, or function, of the web-app is a non-scientific questionnaire (or personality test) that acts as an introduction to the film and hopefully leads the visitor to consider themselves in relation to intergenerational space travel.

During the course of the questionnaire the answers provided shape (and re-shape) a two-dimensional circle. Finally the visitor may choose to record their dearest memory from earth.

Upon completion the visitor can view their unique 2D form in the archive function of the web-app, share it or browse the other visitors unique forms and testimonials.

Shown below are a selection of screenshots from the app that display excerpts of the experience: from introduction, personality test and archive.
